There are different types of caregivers. We will look at them here:
Companions are not permitted to physically give any hands-on assistance to their clients. Companions cannot assist with or give clients a bath but they can hand the client a towel to wash or to dry their back. Companions can perform homemakers’ duties such as meal preparation, laundry, linen change, light housekeeping etc. and they may transport clients to places such as the grocery store and doctors’ appointments.
Personal Care Providers (PCP) can provide hands on care to the clients such as washing and drying their backs. They are able to cook. A PCP may have obtained training through other agencies, but they are not trained and certified by the states.
A Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) is certified by the state. They can work in hospitals and nursing homes, etc. and can take vitals such as blood pressure, temp and respirations. CNAs can provide hands-on care, such as assistance with a bath, hygiene, dressing, ambulation and other activities of daily living.
